COLONIE, NY – Albany County Republican and Conservative Leader Frank Mauriello today called on state officials to make important improvements to traffic safety along Central Avenue in Colonie. Specifically, inadequate lighting along this critical County corridor has made pedestrian crossing substantially dangerous.

“Central Avenue is one of our County’s primary corridors and one that thousands of residents use to get to work, to shopping locations, and all other destinations – and it is one of the busiest roads in our County. Unfortunately, much of Central Avenue is not adequately lit within Colonie,” wrote Leader Mauriello.

In a recent letter to the state Department of Transportation (DOT), Leader Mauriello referenced a 2016 announcement made by the DOT and New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) to “enhance visibility and safety, as well as reduce energy costs” along Central Avenue in Colonie.

Since March 31, 2016, there have been exactly 100 pedestrian-involved traffic incidents – including five fatalities – along this stretch of road, according to data provided by the Colonie Police Department.

“I once again request that the Department of Transportation look into current light levels along Central Avenue, one of the key corridors in both the Town and Village of Colonie. Following this examination, should the Department concur with my assessment and that of my neighbors, it is incumbent upon the Department to move quickly to remedy this issue with improved lighting,” said Leader Mauriello.
